All Aboard: The Strategic Planning Cruise

//All Aboard: The Strategic Planning Cruise

In 2010, I dreamed of forming a women’s group that could be a safe environment for nurturing dreams, brainstorming ideas, identifying resources, providing connections and obtaining perspectives of such great depth and substance to spur catalytic change. The creation of The Women’s Leadership Advisory Board (LAB) has met those initial expectations and then some. It has grown into something much more valuable for the members – a place that brings out the best in each person and in the group itself.
Each month, we meet in a different part of the greater Houston area for members’ convenience. We know that one month soon, the meeting will be held in our area, and we’ll experience the luxury of a short commute.
During our monthly meetings, our agenda typically consists of these elements:
· An opportunity to check in with each other over a continental breakfast
· MasterMind sessions for two of our members, one hour each for these two members who have brought forth a business or career challenge to brainstorm challenges, obtain resources, and gain different perspectives.
· Book discussions: Our first book of the year to read and review individual insights and applications for each members is “Orbiting the Giant Hairball.”
· Facilitated leadership session on one of these four competencies:
1. Leading with Authenticity (Topics include Ethics & Integrity; Trust; Communication; Resiliency; Blending Work/Life)
2. Leading Others (Topics include Talent Assessment and Management; Creating and leading teams; Managing Conflict; Strategies for Meeting Effectiveness)
3. Leading the Future (Topics include Strategic Planning; Change Management; Creativity & Innovation)
4. Leading the Business (Topics include Financial Acumen; Operational Systems; Marketing Plans; Sales Processes; Customer Service; Policies & Procedures)
In January of 2012, we held our first facilitated leadership session of 2012 with our focus on Strategic Planning, co-facilitated by Laurie Peterson of New Horizon Strategies and myself. With three days of planning at sea balanced by three fun-filled days in the ports of Roatan, Belize and Cozumel, we came back to dry land energized by the beauty of nature and the opportunity to swim, snorkel and scuba dive in the sparkling blue waters of the Caribbean. This time of blending work and play epitomizes my work philosophy: work hard; play harder. With a great plan in hand, we are each on our way to a strategically designed and successful 2012!
