Once They’re Hired, How Long Will They Stay?

/, Positive Work Environments, Selection/Once They’re Hired, How Long Will They Stay?

Just as employers are evaluating their new hires, employees evaluate their initial interactions, projects and assignments in terms of “is this a good decision I have made to work here or isn’t it?” Long after the honeymoon has ended for the new employee, these evaluations continue to take place internally. Sadly, it’s not until the employee submits a resignation letter does someone (sadder still, usually HR and not the supervisor) ask the employee, “What could we have done to have made a difference to keep you here?”

That’s why regular STAY interviews are so critical for the supervisor to ask during the employee’s tenure with the company. Asking questions like, “What do you like best about working here? What one thing would you change about working here if you could? I want to ensure that your plans for the future include staying here in the company. Have you thought about what you’d like to be doing within our company for your future?”

STAY conversations send the message that the supervisor cares about the employee and his/her contributions to the success of the organization. STAY conversations set the foundation for developmental conversations to plan for the employee’s future growth – preferably within your company!

Since the employee’s relationship with the supervisor is a critical element in job satisfaction, improving that working relationship becomes easier with the use of  PXT Select. In addition to the Selection report which provides assistance during the hiring process, the supervisor has access to a Manager-Employee report to assist in developing that working relationship between them. Additional reports, including the Coaching report and Career Development report, are available to assist the manager in providing the tools, resources and development opportunities for the development of the employee in an existing role and in determining future positions that he/she may be best suited for within the same department or elsewhere in the company. An employee can select up to five positions within the company to determine a best fit for himself/herself.
